Three More Make it Official for City Council

Looks like we have three more candidates who made things official late last week by filing treasurer appointments with the City Secretary, and one candidate who amended his filing.  These, of course, will be added to my post on who’s in the running so far.

Josh Verde amended his filing to reflect the change in the map from District J to District C.  Karen Derr also filed for District C.

As expected, Council staffer Criselda Romero filed for District J.

Dr. Joseph Edmonds, MD filed for an unspecified City Council seat, joining eight others who don’t appear to have made up their minds yet or haven’t gotten around to their compliance yet.

UPDATE: There is a Joseph L. Edmonds, Jr. registered in Precinct 0087 at the same address as the treasurer, Staci K. Edmonds.  Unless the person who filed is Joseph Edmonds, Sr. or III, he has a Houston address, but Harris County considers him a resident of West University Place for voter registration purposes.  Precinct 0087 also does not appear on the list of precincts that are included in the City.

Treasurer Appointment filings for the entire list of candidates can be found HERE.

I would really hate to be on the presidential advance team right about now

In what had to be a serious pucker-moment for the Secret Service, one of the president’s limos got stuck trying to exit the US Embassy in Ireland.  From the Secret Service:

Departing the US Embassy – Dublin, the Secret Service Spare Limousine, carrying staff and support personnel only, bottomed out at the top of the driveway rendering the vehicle inoperable. Occupants were relocated into other vehicles and the motorcade departed out another exit without further incident. No injuries.

The size of our vehicles is always an issue and taken into consideration during the advance process. However, it only takes a slight miscalculation for problem like this to occur. Appropriate follow-up will be conducted.

I will give the Secret Service a lot of credit for appearing calm and collected during the situation and for downplaying it in their official statement (they always do), but one of the primary purposes of “The Beast,” as it is called, is to be able to keep going in the face of untold disaster and attack in order to get the president out of harm’s way.  Rendering the vehicle immobile is pretty high up on list of things of things the Secret Service doesn’t want to happen.

Even though it wasn’t the vehicle the president was riding in, his limo was still left with no easy escape route.  I’m willing to bet the “Appropriate follow-up” included someone’s rear end getting quite a bit of chewing.  If you know of any out of work land surveyors, the Secret Service might be hiring soon.  The video is below.

Houston 2011 Municipal Treasurer Filings

The impetus for starting this blog was really based in this – Facebook kept screwing up the formatting and dumping the information, so I figured it might be worthwhile to just move to a stable platform that I can control a bit more.

As many of you know I make weekly trips over to visit Ms. Anna Russell and poke around in the file cabinet a bit to see who has filed treasurer appointments for the municipal elections.  She asked me to make a special mention that there is no “definitive” list of candidates who have filed treasurer appointments because they stay in effect in perpetuity unless a candidate files a final report.  In theory, someone from 10 years ago could still have an appointment in effect and hop into a race.

I have included here for your perusal a list of candidates who are defnitely in the running, told people they are running, rumored to be running, and a few notes, as applicable.  I have not pulled treasurer filings from before January 1, 2011.

My plan here is to update this note as a master and just re-share it when I make those updates.  (candidates for each race are listed in alphabetical order with the incumbent at the top).

I sprang a few bucks for copies of treasurer appointments, and they can be found at  https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0Bz8lttWE08ZkM2E4OGI1NzgtNTY4OS00ZjliLTliM2ItZWQ1YTY1ZTczMDkz&hl=en

A spreadsheet of all candidates, including their precincts and voter registration information can be found at https://spreadsheets0.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?authkey=CJ_SpZgL&hl=en&key=tPNpVQNPLX2egjHZWVaJWgg#gid=0 (Special thanks to Greg Wythe for running this list against the new map for me.

The full list and a few notes is after the jump. Continue reading

Stepping out into the world of blogging

I really have to admit I am a bit intimidated by the world of blogging.

Poeople like Kuff, Greg, Daniel and countless others (I’m sure I’ll get in trouble for not mentioning all those other fantastic bloggers I know by name) seem to have really mastered it, and I’m truly amazed by the content they produce.  It’s a lot to measure up to.

Nonetheless, I’ve decided to give it a try, and we’ll see how things work out.  I hope all those wonks I know will enjoy my contributions to the local political and public policy scene, and I’m positive all those Longhorns I know will appreciate reading about how proud I am to be a Fightin’ Texas Aggie.

That being said, here’s a little something to start things off right:
